Ancient Hydroponics Gardens

The word “hydroponics” is derived from two Greek words: cidra, meaning water, and punikos, meaning labor; thus, literally “waterworks.” Contrary to popular belief, hydroponic gardening is an ancient form of agriculture, going back 3,000 years. There are references to the cultivation of plants directly in water in Egyptian records dating back to the time of the New Kingdom and the “Woman-King,” Pharoah Hatshepsut around 1460 BCE.

The best-known grow systems of the ancient world were the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Also known as the Gardens of Semiramis, the Hanging Gardens operated on the principles of hydroponic gardening. Reputed to have been located near Al-Hillah in present-day Iraq, this elaborate grow system has become regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

The Hanging Gardens were built by King Nebuchadnezzar around 600 BCE. His wife, Amytis, was from Media, whose people were the ancestors of the modern Kurds. The country of Medea was a mountainous one, roughly corresponding to present-day Kurdistan, northern Iran and Azerbaijan. Legend says Amytis became homesick for the mountains and the flora of her homeland; Nebuchadnezzar had the Gardens constructed for her. According to Greek historians of the time, the Hanging Gardens, a water pipe led into a well tower, which supplied water via a number of vaults for fruit trees growing in a layer of asphalt.

Centuries later, Italian traveler Marco Polo, who reportedly visited China during the late 13th Century CE and introduced pasta to Italy, commented on what he called the “Floating Gardens.” Around the same time on the other side of the world, the Mexica – one of the native peoples who later formed the Aztec Empire of Mexico – built a city called Tenochtitlan on the shores of Lake Texcoco. Where Mexico City stands today, the Mexica constructed an extensive urban center that included a type of early hydroponic system upon which plants were cultivated on the surface of the water. These early Mexican “floating gardens” were developed out of necessity, because arable land was at a premium in the area. Called chinampas, they were actually small, artificial islands that were created by scooping up mud from the marshy areas bordering the lakes. This mud was ultimately held together by tree roots; food plants were cultivated on these “islands,” and were amazingly productive.

The modern history of hydroponics actually begins in 1627, when Sir Francis Bacon’s Sylva Sylvarum was published posthumously. In this treatise, Bacon – an English philosopher and contemporary of Shakespeare – wrote about the cultivation of terrestrial plants without soil. Although Bacon died before his theories could be explored, the idea of water culture caught on as an area of scientific study throughout the remainder of the 17th Century. By the 1860s, German botanists Julius von Sachs and Wilhelm Knop had perfected the first nutrient solutions for soilless agriculture, and modern hydroponic gardening was born.

Surf Break Criteria: Research Before You Go

Experienced surfers have dozens of great surf breaks to choose from even if they live on the New England coast, but each of us has to decide which break to call our own on any given day. Or, if you are just starting out as a surfer, you will want to choose one break as your wave of choice and continue going there until you’ve expended all you could from it. All surfers must decide where to paddle out, so here’s a list of criteria to help you make the most informed decision.

People

With the popularity of surfing growing all over the world, there are always surf breaks that are a bit more notorious for localism, which is never a good arena for a beginner. Surfers can be mean and possessive of their waves, so you’ll want to find a break where the people are nice. If you’re a people person, try to head somewhere friendly, where you won’t get your head lopped off if you get into a bang up out in the water. Or, if you’re kind of a loner and you can hold your own in the water, then it’s okay to hit the edgier spots where people kind of grimace at you. In most cases, though, it’s always nice to be around people who are friendly and can even strike up conversation with you even though you are complete strangers.

Wave Quality and Consistency

The quality of the wave depends heavily on the wind and swell conditions, so check your local surf or weather report for the latest update. There are many conditions that make a pleasant surfing experience, but you can get a good snapshot of what’s going on in your area simply by looking at swell height and wind direction from a local website. Or, you can always just head on down to the beach and check for wave quality visually. Relative to wave quality, though, is the actual consistency of the sets. Sets are simply a grouping of waves that break within a period of time. You want to paddle out where sets come through at least every 15 minutes. That way, everyone out there can get a wave or two and not have to fight over the same one. Every surfer is in the water for the same reason: to have a mellow, relaxed time with little possibility of drowning. Share the waves when they’re good, but still get out there when they’re not so good.

Water Quality

The sky can be perfectly blue and the temperature warm, but if the water is not clean, you’re certainly not going to want to paddle out. Die-hard surfers might paddle out in crappy conditions, but if there was an oil spill or sewage drain, then even they will resist getting in the water.  Surfers want to be able to get their heads wet without stinking—or worse, getting sick from contaminated water. Bays generally tend to have better wave conditions but more polluted water. You have to decide which is more important to you. Check your local website for water quality conditions in your area, especially after it rains.

A few other things to look for in a surf break are freshwater showers, functioning bathrooms, and safety. If you tend to surf before or after work and don’t have time to run home to change, you should absolutely find a break with a shower and bathroom. It’s also advisable to choose a break that has a lifeguard or is close to water rescue. Also consider surfing at a break that doesn’t have rocks jutting out from the water at low tide, or with notorious rip currents that can suck you out to sea. Ask friends who surf where they like to go. As you continue surfing, you will generate a longer list and discover more secret spots.

Surfing - Surf Culture, The Good, The Bad, And The Beautiful

While the days of the '50s beach movies are long gone, some things remain, even as they have evolved. Surf culture is first and foremost all about surfing. Sure there are fashion elements, styles of speech and a whole lingo. But surfers are united in their love of the perfect wave that gives the perfect ride.

It takes months or longer to get familiar with the many ways a wave can form and break. It takes a long time to build up the skills to take advantage of it. But surfers will share locations, techniques and provide help to those who are struggling to get up to speed.

That's the good.

There are fringe elements in surfing, as there are in any culture. They think they own the waves, they may dominate the beach. Sometimes they engage in threats and violence against others. Not cool. That part of surf culture sometimes gets big press. That's not surprising since people often, for reasons no one understands, prefer to read about bad news.

That part of the culture happens on public beaches. Yet the surf Nazis think it's ok to try to control access to the beach and the waves. Whatever demons are running around in them that push them to do it, they come out when they can get away with it. Police and right-thinking surfers are rebelling against that anarchy, but it sometimes still happens.

That's the bad.

But the most important part of surf culture is the beautiful. And there is lots of it.

The sky on a clear blue day isn't something created by surf culture. But the choice to take advantage of it is. Seeking the sun and the colored sky plays into the feelings that draw surfers to the waves. Even when the skies are gray, the view can be dramatic in a quiet way. That's part of surf culture, that impressive natural display.

The warm yellow sand also is a given, but it's another element that draws surfers to become part of the culture, not just weekend wave riders. Nothing wrong with that, of course. The wide stretch of gently curving sand that gives underfoot is part of the natural gift that creates the mellow state that is part of surf culture.

But there's a state that isn't mellow, that is all passion. That comes from riding the perfect wave in a perfect way. And there's a kind of beauty to that, too. It's the beauty of excellence, the quiet pride of a skill well earned and the whooping joy of the rush when you use it.

Whether big endorsements that flow from winning competitions is your goal, or you just want to experience the ride for its own sake, that beauty is there for anyone who seeks it.

UV Suits, Surf Suits, Sunsuits : What Are They and How Do They Work?

UV protective swimsuits for children are a relatively new phenomenon, they were introduced into the UK at the end of the 90's and joined mainstream fashion from around 2002. There is no standard nomenclature in the market for sun protective swimwear.

UV suit is the most common term, but surf suit, sunsuit, skin and the rather horrible "rash suit" are all used interchangeably in the trade. Whatever you call it, this is a swimsuit designed to protect the wearer from sun damage and works in two ways: it covers more skin than a traditional swimsuit, and the fabric used is specifically designed to block out the sun's damaging rays.

The basic style of the garment doesn't vary much: most go from elbow to knee, with a high neck and zip up front. This gives good coverage of the areas of a child's body most prone to burn, but allows freedom of movement and is fairly cool to wear. Styles with long sleeves and legs are available, but many children find these restrictive and hot. The better cut UV suits have panels so the garment fits the body shape and moves well when wet.

The fabric used in a protective garment of this kind should have a UPF rating and the manufacturer should display this on the garment tags. UPF is the fabric's Ultraviolet Protection Factor. UPF50+ is the highest rating awarded to fabric. A garment with UPF50 will allow one fiftieth of the UVR to pass through, UPF40 will allow one fortieth and so on. This means :
- A UPF50+ garment will block more than 98% of the sun's rays
and
- A UPF40+ will block more than 97.5%.
A child wearing a garment with UPF50+ could spend 4 hours (240 minutes) in the sun and receive less than 5 minutes worth of damaging rays on covered areas (240 minures/50 = 4.8 mins). Of course, in the summer care must always be taken to ensure exposed skin is covered with properly applied sunscreen (SPF is a measure of the protection provided by sunscreens) and eyes protected with sunglasses.

The protection on most UPF50 UV suits does not come from a chemical finish to the fabric, but by the incredibly dense knit. Most have a very high lycra content to ensure the garment keeps its shape well when wet and either a ploycotton or nylon base. The nylon/lycra is the faster drying option and is better for children who are in and out of the water constantly without getting changed. The polycottons and blended fabrics have a more natural hand touch, but do take considerably longer to dry and so are better used for paddling rather than swimming as the higher water retention can be chilling.

Fabric testing is done in laboratories on dry, unstretched fabric for consistent results. Europe and Australia use a slightly different spectrum to test fabric so protective garments marketed in both hemispheres should be tested to both standards. The regulations governing testing in Europe is EN13758-1 2002 and in Australia and New Zealand AS/NZ 4399-1996.

Top Extreme Sport: Kite Surfing

Among the sixteen hundred athletes participating in the study, 71% listed kite surfing as the most exciting and dynamic extreme sport. Only a third had actually attempted the sport yet nearly all indicated that intended to "give it a try" before the end the year. Participants were between the ages of 18 - 35 and all were self-identified sports enthusiast. In a national survey commissioned by the American Kite Surfing Association (AKSA), kite surfing, a relatively new sport in North America is ranked as the top Extreme Sport. So What’s so Amazing About the Garden Route?

According to Webster's International Dictionary, the definition of amazing is ‘bewilderment arising from fear, surprise or wonder' and once you have visited the Garden Route, you too will be bewildered with wonder at its breath-taking natural beauty and shy, elusive inhabitants.

Magical, mystical land

It is a magical, mystical land where shadowy, near-extinct elephants browse undisturbed in an indigenous forest that, to this day, is still largely impenetrable and where some of the most distinctively coloured birds and butterflies ply their pollen.

It is a region where some of its occupants include the tiny Blue Duiker, a Bambi-like creature that measures only 35 centimetres at its highest point and weighs a miniscule 4 kg's, and the endangered Knysna Sea Horse that grows to 13 cm and is found exclusively in the lagoons of the area.

Diverse natural environments

Kloofing, blackwater tubing, kayaking and the tree-top canopy tour are but a handful of superior activities to enjoy whilst visiting the Garden Route.

It is an area that is effectively squeezed into a strip of land between the warm yet turbulent waters of the Indian Ocean and the lofty peaks of the Outeniqua Mountain range, so both beaches and mountain passes are within easy range.

Some of these mountain passes have been declared national monuments and the tales of their birth is hewn into the history books of the area. A quick sojourn from Oudtshoorn, the Ostrich capital of the world, over the awe-inspiring Swartberg Pass is a must for all visitors to the area. While near Oudtshoorn, pop into the Cango Caves where stalactites and stalagmites have been well-preserved for an eternity.

Robust economy

The Garden Route boasts a particularly robust economy and is the preferred holiday destination and full-time residence of the wealthy of South Africa. Well designed and managed golf estates abound, making this the avid golfers' Mecca while Plettenberg Bay is home to South Africa's polo players and ponies.

The area is also carefully managed and conservation is paramount. With the vast number of national parks, the Garden Route should retain its mystery and extraordinary beauty for many generations to come.

Sorry, looks like they were a limited edition and the limit was up. I've searched all over the net as well, and there's no sign of any suit by that name. I have also run across a lot of other limited edition suits by Speedo, but I have to admit most of those color combos look rather gay. So unless your brothers are I wouldn't. Why not just show them what you can find and ask their preferences.

Speedo Cup 2008 Greenwich Water Polo Girls

Here's what I do:
To warm up, I swim a 200 reverse, then I do 4 sprints (2 head-up freestyle, 1 butterfly with breaststroke kick, and a lap of 3-3, which is 3 strokes of freestyle, then flip onto your back and 3 strokes of backstroke.)
Then I tread 4 laps. 2 laps facing front, then the other two on either side. Make sure your hands are out of the water, or else the treading is kinda useless. Sometime I get a gallon and I fill it up with water and tread in like a zigzag pattern with the gallon above my head.
After that, get a water polo ball and dribble it across the pool. You can try different techniques like swim a few strokes and then pick up the ball and pump fake it. Or you can swim with the ball in your hand.
Work on your passing, make sure you don't lob the ball, but throw it straight. Maybe pass with a friend. You can do off the water passes, pump fake then pass, alternate hands, and pressure passing.
Then get a goal into the water and work on your shots. There's pop shots, skip shots, t-shots. Make sure you work on getting your shots into the top corners of the goal.
There's a whole bunch more, like setting the ball, back hand shots, driving in, and a whole bunch of play in the game, but if you just want to condition, work on the things I said. G'luck!

Asa Wright Nature Center, is Trinidad and Tobago´s premier birding location and it has been widely recognized as one of the most successful eco-tourism stories in the world. Asa Wright, with a listing of 159 bird species, is a 270-acre conservatory, located on a former cocoa-coffee-citrus plantation partly reclaimed by secondary forest and largely surrounded by impressive rainforest. The center has several cottages that are available for rent and one can choose to spend a night, a weekend or even longer. There are numerous trails throughout the property and very knowledgeable guides. Two of the highlights are the short walk to the manakin leks to see these beautiful little birds dance to attract a mate and to see and hear the Bearded Bellbird. Another special attraction of the Asa Wright Nature Centre, is a breeding colony of the nocturnal Oilbird, or Guacharo (Steatornis caripensis). Located in Dunston Cave, this is the only known easily accessible colony of this species. These visits must however generally be booked in advance as the number of visits and visitors is limited.

Wet, wild and wonderful are the words that describe yet another popular outdoor Caribbean vacation activity; River Tubing. On Grenada's Balthazar River, Dominica´s Layou River, Jamaica´s White River or Great River you can spin and swirl in large modified tubes as the river currents take you on a thrilling ride down river. Along the way you can enjoy the scenery of natural untouched rain forest and at the end of your ride you can swim in the river´s natural pools.

Nature has blessed the Caribbean in innumerable ways and provided it with a host of natural attractions. On the island of Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands is a national park known as The Baths. Here giant granite boulders are scattered about a beach lapped by the blue Caribbean Sea. Standing almost 50 feet tall, these massive boulders form a series of grottoes in which to play and explore. Within this seaside labyrinth are many placid pools that create a truly romantic locale.

St. Lucia boasts of one of the most unique Caribbean natural attractions with what is probably the world´s only drive-in volcano. The five acre wide hissing crater is a red, blue and green tinged landscape, which has 24 steaming vents that hint at deposits of iron, copper oxide, magnesium and others minerals bubbling to the surface. The bioluminescent bay found at Puerto Mosquito (Mosquito Bay) located on the southern shore of the island of Vieques, Puerto Rico has to be rated as one of the things you must see before you die. A trip into the bay on a balmy night is a magical experience because when the calm waters around the bay are disturbed, the microscopic organisms in the bay emit a blue-green light and so swimming or kayaking in the bay is like floating among the stars. The 2008 Guinness Book of World Records has officially declared this magical bioluminescent bay the brightest recorded in the world.

The Caribbean was considered desirable property in the 17th and 18th century, which led to numerous battles between France, England, Spain and Holland and many islands changing ownership several times. The need to protect these islands resulted in numerous fortifications, while the change of ownership led to varying architectural styles. Many of these historic sites are well preserved and provide interesting glimpses of the past. Two of these sites are Brimstone Hill in St Kitts and the Garrison Historic District in Barbados.

The Brimstone Hill Fortress has been converted to a National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of historical, cultural and architectural significance. The fortress is considered one of the best preserved historical fortifications in the Americas. It has been described as "a monument to the ingenuity of the British military engineers who designed it and to the skill, strength and endurance of the African slaves who built and maintained it". Tours of Brimstone Hill are conducted daily, and highlights include the hospital, ammunition stores, artillery officer's quarters, the Prince of Wales Bastion, and the Citadel of Fort George. In addition to learning about the historical significance of the fort, a visit affords one the opportunity to enjoy attractive panoramic vistas of forested mountains, cultivated fields, the historical township of Sandy Point, and the neighboring islands of Nevis, Montserrat, Saba, St. Martin and St. Barts.

The Garrison Historic Area in Barbados surrounds the Garrison Savannah, which is the center of much of the sporting and recreational activity in Barbados. The Savannah however is a historic location for much more than sport. The historical significance of the Garrison Savannah goes back to 1650 when Charles Fort was erected in the area and then in 1705, St. Ann´s Fort was added. This area developed into a military complex and being the site of a military complex, numerous buildings were constructed from the 1660´s to the 1800´s. These buildings today give the Garrison area much of its historical and architectural interest. On any walk around the Garrison area you cannot miss seeing the numerous cannons that are located in the area. These form part of the Barbados National Cannon Collection, which constitutes the largest cluster of 17th Century English cannons in the world. One of the prominent buildings in this area is the Main Guard building facing the racetrack. This elegant Georgian building from 1802 with its handsome clock tower and wide verandah is now an information centre and houses exhibits about the West Indian Regiment. As you continue around the Savannah there are numerous 17th- to 19th-century military buildings constructed from brick brought as ballast on ships from England and also several memorials. Another significant building in this area is the Barbados Museum, which is housed in a compound that was formerly a military prison, and centered around a large airy courtyard with trees and flowering shrubs.

When night falls your activities do not end as the Caribbean has an array of bars, clubs and world class restaurants. For true local flavor however, the weekly street parties are unmatched. On the island of St Lucia the fishing village of Gros Islet transforms itself every Friday night into a colorful carnival scene, featuring soca and reggae music and a "jump up" (dancing in the streets). The Fish Fry on Friday´s in Grenada´s village of Gouyave provides you the opportunity to sample an array of freshly caught local seafood to the backdrop of calypso rhythms. Not to be outdone the Sunday School in Tobago´s Buccoo Village held every Sunday night allows you to dance to the music of the steelband while looking out on the fishing boats gently rocking in the bay.

Well, the best thing to do is to join a club team. You would get the best preparation and almost guarantee you a spot on varsity (as long as the club coaches are good of course). The main downside is that it cab get expensive.

If u cant do club then this is what u should do~

♥join a club swim team (usually cheaper than water polo)

♥start swimming laps everyday but only if you practice with someone else so u can push each other ~ try sprints and endurance and do at least a combo of this for (at least) 1200m a day

♥work on ball-handling skills outside of the water by throwing the ball against a wall. use only ur wrist not whole arm and bend at the waist

♥RUN!!! try for a mile a day i mean it shouldn't take more than 10 min of ur day and it really helps with cardio

♥just go to the gym and work out your core, shoulders, thighs, and arms with weights, sit ups and pushups.

There is the direct shot, either directly from picking the ball up from the water, or crossed from a pass from another player. Note defense is usually man-to-man and seeks to stay between the offensive player and the cage

Another general strategy is the drive, where a driver (generally one of the flats or the point man) creates contact with his or her defender in an attempt to get around him and obtain favorable shooting position to the cage, or to get close to the cage (i.e. become a hole set) and turn his back against his defender to take a shot from this improved position.

Visiting The Veneto

I last went to Italy as a teenager in the 60’s, with my English parents who had just discovered the cheap package tour. The hotel was an oasis of fellow Brit tourists and the strangeness of Italian food was the hot topic. We didn’t venture beyond the resort except to go into town for tacky souvenirs. No one considered that we were within driving distance of famous historic cities full of priceless art. My folks didn’t know, and would not have risked uncharted territory if they had. Years later I regretted the missed opportunity, and promised myself I would one day return. I am now past fifty, and along with two friends, am traveling back to Italy to make good on my promise. First stop is Italy\'s Veneto, La Serenissima... Venice.

I step out of the Stazione Ferroviaria Santa Lucia and behold the Grand Canal, alive with boats and launches, Venetians going about their business on gondolas and vaporettos… cabs and buses to you and me. An immediate first-time excitement rises up in me, and it banishes the jet lag. 

We trundle our rolling cases across the Scalzi bridge. A five minute walk from the station brings us to the Hotel Marin. The place isn’t fancy, and it’s not on a canal, but it came highly recommended. The rooms here are clean and comfortable, our stay includes a wonderful continental breakfast of fresh dark coffee, crusty rolls and Mama’s homemade preserves, and the prices, for Venice, are a steal.  

Venice’s distinctive energy speaks to the lover and the artist in every traveler. It will slow you down. If you\'re lucky it will stop you in your tracks. This city is about remarkable architecture, palaces, churches, and art… you won’t have to search for it, it’s everywhere you go. While you wander the piazzas and linger on the bridges, imagine the famous Venetians who might have lingered there before you...  Marco Polo, Casanova, and the red priest himself, Antonio Vivaldi, ushering his all-girl orchestra to San Marco for a performance of his latest concerti.  

You quickly realize how little the city has changed over the centuries. Find the Basilica San Marco or San Giorgio Maggiore, or the Doge’s Palace, depicted in some famous fourteenth century painting, and the image will be exactly as the structure stands today. You are surrounded by living history.  

We are going to a concert tonight at the Scuola Grande di San Rocco... a beautiful church famous for its Tintoretto paintings. We go early to view the art before the show starts. The canvases are huge, the images bold renditions of biblical scenes: The Adoration of the Magi, The Slaughter of the Innocents, The Annunciation… each scene emerging out of darkness, illuminated by an unseen light source glowing somewhere within the painting. We are dazzled, glad we chose this concert from the many that take place each night all over Venice.   

A trio performs Vivaldi… violin, flute and lovely soprano. They keep us enchanted for a half hour. The performance ends, rather prematurely, I think, and everyone rises and heads for the stairs. “Where are they going?” I ask the man seated next to me. “The gallery,” he says, pointing up. It’s not over, this is intermission. 

We follow the crowd up a grand staircase to an even grander salon.  At the top of the stairs, a man hands each of us an elegant, double handled, polished wood mirror. It becomes clear that the paintings downstairs were just a fraction of the Tintoretto collection. The rest are here, dozens of them, not just lining the walls, but all over the ceiling, reminiscent of the elaborate ceilings we have seen in the Doge’s Palace. The mirrors are to save us from twenty minutes of neck pain. Venetian glass makers invented the mirror in 1508, so this is how people viewed these magnificent ceilings when they were new… the striking reflected images must have been the equivalent of sixteenth century MTV…hi-tech of the day.

 Walking back to the hotel we pass an alley and see a welcoming brazier lighting up the night. A collection of motley tables sprawl into the alley outside the Ostaria al Vecio Pozzo – The Old Well Pub. And sure enough there is an ancient well set into the cobblestones. It’s late, but the dinner tide naturally rolls in much later here.

 We take a table and ask the young Adonis who comes for our order what he recommends. He brings homemade pasta, a platter with three different fish, a seafood risotto made with champagne and a simple carafe of house white. No king’s banquet ever tasted so delicious. We will return twice more before we leave.

 Adonis’s name is Andrea. Someone takes our picture with him and when it is developed, high in the sky above our heads, to no one’s surprise, is a full moon.

Of all Italy\'s wonderful cities, Venice is the place which has stayed in my heart. It tugs at me still, in part because you can’t visit Venice without tripping over one very poignant fact. 

 La Serenissima remains a tiny city built on water, which now stands defenseless against the onslaught of twenty-first century climate change descending upon us all. High tides have always flooded Venice, but whereas in the past the flooding occurred a half dozen times a year, today it happens forty times. Cherished buildings and monuments continue to be badly damaged by the erosive tides.  

The Italian government, UNESCO and a charity called Venice in Peril are raising money for restoration and research into a system of gates or barriers which would block the high tides and save Venice. Plans so far have been highly controversial, exorbitantly costly, and no one is sure that it can actually be done. If it can’t be done, there is every likelihood that Venice will be the first major casualty of global warming, and the city will be lost.  

There will come a generation who will only know the glory that was Venice through recorded film, pictures and written travelogues. They will miss the feel of water slapping against the gondola’s prow, the verismo serenade of the gondolier, the softness of a Venetian breeze dancing across the lagoon. As one who might have missed those things myself, I am eternally grateful that Venice has remained standing long enough for me to meet her in person.

The history of this natural port dates back to the fifth century BC when it was used by the Greeks and Phoenicians as a natural shelter. The city boasts a lively mixture of modernist architecture interspersed with Roman sites, buildings and monuments. It has all the charm and character of a local Spanish city along with an interesting history.

The Conception Castle is a modernist building which stands square and dominating it has a panoramic glass lift which offers by far the best views of the town. From the top of this lift you can see the Roman theatre, which happened to be found completely by chance. Up until recently much of this citys Roman heritage lay buried and un-disturbed.

In 1988 a few blocks were uncovered by heavy rain on the hill side, unfortunately almost an entire neighborhood had been built over the top of the theatre once residents had been happily relocated the painstaking excavation and re-construction of the theatre began; now a must see structure you can even observe the restoration work taking place.

As more and more of the history is uncovered on a daily basis, a trip at the start of your day to the local Tourist information could ensure you dont miss any new developments.

For the more adventurous a short drive from Cartagena (approximately 25 kilometers on the N340) will whisk you away into the stark dramatic landscape for which this region of Spain became so famous. This desert landscape gives the impression that you might be some where like Arizona rather than Spain, Tailored to the more adventurous its also a great place to take a picnic and soak up the breath taking scenery.

One of the best ways to spend a day with the children has to be a day at the beach. Enjoying the sea and sunshine seems to be becoming a thing of the past in the UK. Take a square cake (if you're making the actual cake, add blue food coloring) use blue frosting to cover it, and use the knife to make it look like water. Then, use play doh to make the head, arms and torso of a person (also make a swimming cap), and a water polo ball. Make the person hold the ball and place it in the corner. If you want it to look like it's throwing the ball, support the play doh by wrapping it around bendable wire. First of all, water polo is one of the greatest sports on earth. I've played, coached and refereed the sport for decades.

The basics you need are:
1: Learn how to egg-beater kick to stay up.
2. Learn how to catch with "soft" hands and accurately throw.
3. Learn to know where you teammates are so that you can get rid of the ball quickly.
4. Learn to keep your hips high in the water at all times.

Those are basic skills. But, water polo is a game of experience and the more you play the better you'll be. You must join a summer club if you are to progress. I live near Sacramento, CA and there are numerous age group clubs in the region as there are in San Jose, Concord, Modesto, Fresno and, of course, all over Southern California. If you don't play, those you play with and against will be getting experience that you're not getting.

Although polo will get you in great shape for cross country, cross country will not get you in great shape for polo. Actually, polo gets you in great shape for EVERYTHING! While in college, a polo teammate, on a Friday afternoon suggested we take a bicycle ride from Redding to Eureka, CA (165 miles each way thorough mountains) and come back on Sunday ... DONE!! We could stay up with many of the runners on the track team ... we could go out and run 5 miles w/o a problem ... it was awesome.

Dog surfing popularity grows with competitions, accessibility, and media coverage

The sport of dog surfing has grown considerably in popularity in the past few years due to a growing number of competitions and the national media attention that those events have received.

You read that correctly.  Dog surfing.  As in, dogs riding waves on surf boards.  It almost always involves a dog standing on the board and a human pushing the dog surfer into wave.  As far fetched as it sounds, the sport has grown enough in popularity that there are now several dog surfing competitions.

The largest of the competitions is the Loews Surf Dog Competition, held annually in San Diego.  In 2009, there were hundreds of dog participants and many hundreds, if not thousands, of spectators. Purina’s Incredible Dog Challenge in San Diego included a dog surfing competition this year.  Another competition, the Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon, takes place in the fall, also in San Diego.  These events raise money for charities.

These competitions, however obscure sounding, have been featured on local and national media outlets, including NBC’s The Today Show, ESPN, The Baltimore Sun, and The San Diego Union Tribune.

In San Diego, in particular, the spike in popularity has also been helped by the accessibility of dog friendly beaches.  These beaches provide a place to teach dogs to surf, sit and watch other dogs surf, or a place for photographers to capture great dog surfing images.  These beaches include North Beach at Del Mar, Imperial Beach, and Dog Beach in Ocean Beach.

A growing number of great dog surfing photos and videos can be found online.  There is even a book, The Dog’s Guide to Surfing: Hanging Ten with Man’s Best Friend, as well as a popular calendar featuring San Diego dogs surfing every month.

If you have a dog and surfboard, give it a shot.  Dog surfing is a fun way to spend an afternoon at the beach, and does not require big waves.  Just an eager dog.

Florianopolis Surf Excursions

Florianopolis is an island in the state of Santa Catarina state in south Brazil. Florianopolis island has 42 different beaches, most are quite beautiful and many of them have great surf. This article gives a brief overview of each surfing beach, showing its name, overall rating for surf, the direction of the surf break, and the type of surf break, such as beach break, point break, river mouth, etc.

PRAIA MOLE SURF BEACH

Anyone who has visited Florianopolis knows that Praia Mole beach is the best year-round location on the island. Literally translated, "Praia Mole" means "soft beach" and is named so due to its extremely soft and deep sand. Praia Mole beach is centrally & conveniently located on the east coast of the island and is popular for its abundant beautiful people and great surfing. It is also popular because of its convenient location, being very near to the town of Lagoa da Conceicao, where you'll find a majority of the island's bars, restaurants, gift shops, grocery stores, ATMs, a gas station, and one of the best nightclubs on the island.

The surf on Praia Mole is known as being stronger than most other beaches, which suits the surfers just fine but can be dangerous for inexperienced swimmers during days with large surf. Surf can range anywhere from 0 feet to 20 foot faces during the winter months. For weak swimmers and children, the north end of the beach offers a protected cove where the water is always calm and swimming is safe even on some of the largest days of surf. On the beach at Praia Mole, you'll find a volley ball net, a juice bar, a VIP lounge area, and 6 different restaurants that double as beach bars. During the summer months (Dec - Feb) these bars will either have a live DJ spinning or at least have loud music because Brazilians love to dance whenever the opportunity presents itself. There always seems to be some action going on at Praia Mole beach.

JOAQUINA SURF BEACH Joaquina beach (just south of Praia Mole) is one of the best surf beaches in all of Florianopolis and is usually the site of the annual WCT surfing championship. The area surrounding Juaquina beach is environmentally protected sand dunes so there is no housing near the beach but it isn't far from Praia Mole so this isn't an issue. This beach is not one of the beautiful beaches since it is surrounded by nothing but sand dunes and a large parking lot filled with tour buses who drop off Brazilian tourists by the hundreds. However, the surf is great, especially during large swells. This is one of the few beaches that can hold its shape during a very big swell. When the surf is big, it peels left off the northern point.

GALHETA SURF BEACH

Galheta beach, just north of Praia Mole, is also a great surf spot and much less crowded than other surf breaks since there are no access roads to it but it's just a 10-minute walk on the beach from Praia Mole.

PRAIA BRAVA BEACH

Praia Brava is located on the north end of Florianopolis island and the surf is comparable to Praia Mole. Translated, Praia Brava means "furious beach" most likely due to the frequently big and rough surf. This beach is a solid 1-hour drive from Praia Mole, the town of Centro, and the town of Lagoa, which means it's on the outskirts of the island and not convenientle located for vacationers who like to enjoy the Florianopolis nightlife. However, if you're a surfer looking to hit some different surf spots, this spot will suit you well during a nice swell. This beach is not surrounded by jungle and wildlife preserve like most other Florianopolis beaches. Instead, it is packed with tons of hotels and condo complexes. Unfortunately, this area becomes deserted outside December, January, and February (peak summer months) because it is simply too far away from most of the islands nightlife, shopping malls, and restaurants.

Kayaking Basics

Sea kayaking trips range from a few hours to a many weeks. Developed for the active sport of paddling on lakes, bays and the open ocean, most ocean kayaks are made for one or two paddlers. Size and configuration of the kayak are determined by the type of trip you want to make; for example, specialized kayaks such as surf skis are narrower than the typical open-water ocean kayak. Some may have upturned bows, providing better performance into ocean waves and better wave-shedding properties. The length of the ocean kayak affects both its cargo capacity and the ease of staying in a straight line in the water--its "tracking" ability. Very long ocean kayaks are easier to paddle straight, but are harder to turn and maneuver, so they are used mainly for long, open-water trips. The width of the ocean kayak also affects the cargo capacity, the size of the cockpit and overall stability.

Recreational Sea Kayaks

Most recreational sea kayaks are molded in one piece with a "cockpit" to sit in, "foot wells" to brace the feet in a comfortable position with the knees slightly bent and a backrest to provide support and comfort. Hooks along the side and top secure accessories and gear for snorkeling. Some fishing kayaks have rod rests for open-ocean fishing. The one-piece construction eliminates any need of bailing or clearing out water from the hull in rough water or after an overturn. Modern molded sea kayaks are light and easy to transport, as well as easy to use.

Ocean kayak paddles for recreational use are usually made of aluminum, plastic or wood, with high-performance paddles formed of lightweight materials like carbon-fiber. Ocean kayak paddles are made of two spoon-shaped blades on the ends of a shaft, usually "feathered" or set at right angles to each other. As one blade pushes through the water, the other passes through the air at a right angle, reducing wind resistance.

The paddles are attached to the kayak with a tether, so you can't accidentally lose it--no chance of being up the proverbial "creek without a paddle." A few practice strokes in calm water will give even the rank beginner at sea kayaking a feel for how easy it is to move, turn and control the kayak. If you are a beginner, stick with short sea kayak trips for starters. Sea kayaking tour guides and rental businesses will be happy to show you just what to do. And remember, you can do this!

Ocean Kayaking Techniques

If the kayak overturns or if you have been enjoying open-water snorkeling in one of Maui's secluded bays, you can get back into the kayak by following a few basic steps.

• If the kayak is upside down, reach across the bottom of the boat and grab the scupper holes or accessory hooks. Bring your knees up and onto the bottom of the boat. Lean back and the boat will roll over. Lighter kayaks can be flipped over easily.

• Position yourself near the cockpit area facing the kayak. Let your feet float to the surface behind you by floating on your stomach.

• Reach across the boat to the far edge and swim up and on the kayak so your bellybutton is across the centerline of the boat.

• Roll over on your backside, swing your feet into the foot wells, and you're up and ready to go. If you miss the first time, just line up in the middle of the kayak again until you make it. Easy does it, and you're ready to paddle again.

Of course, you shouldn't forget the basic safety rules to prepare for that long-awaited kayaking trip onto Hawaiian waters. A little preparation can mean the difference between having a once-in-a-lifetime dream trip on Hawaii seas or a disappointing experience.

Follow These Simple Kayaking Tips:

• Always wear a life jacket. Coast Guard regulations require a lifejacket on all kayaks. Wearing the lifejacket will keep your head above water in case of an upset and add insulation to your body.

• If you are a beginner, seek qualified instruction to learn paddling and water safety techniques unique to ocean kayaking.

• Be aware of weather conditions and ocean water temperatures present in the area of Hawaii you plan to kayak. A wet suit or dry suit will keep you comfortable in cold waters, and a simple, long-sleeved shirt can provide protection from intense sun in warm conditions.

• If you are striking out on your own, tell someone your paddle plan, including: where you are going, what you will be doing, how long you expect to be gone and how many people are in your party. Then, do not vary from that plan.

• If you are taking an ocean kayaking tour in a new area on your own, check with the locals regarding currents, shoreline conditions and usual weather patterns. Have an escape route and an alternative place to get off the water if environmental conditions make it necessary. And remember to let someone know your alternative plan as well as well as the original one.

• Always have water and some food with you.

• Be aware of offshore winds that may make it difficult to return to shore.

Also, know how to use your legs and get your body up and elbows, wether its shooting catching blocking or whatever, and always know how to pressure someone without getting fouled (aka egg beater hard w/ hands up). also if you can skull well and get high up brownie points for you. I am NOT a fast swimmer but because I could do that I ended up a goalie.
oh and if you have any way of practicing it, learn to palm the ball if you cannot already because that is super helpful and something they look for

You will need an athletic swim suit so either a speedo or jammers (there normal swim suit length but really tight) and you dont need to wear more than one. There is a ball under rule but it is kinda weird. You can put the ball under water but you should not do it when there is a defender around because if they touch the ball and it is under the water it is the defenders ball (sorry that is really confusing). The ball is about the size of a vollyball but the weight is in between a basketball and a vollyball. If you arent a swimmer start swimming! It is really physically demanding!
